Ennis A win Munster League

The last two rounds of the 2023/2024 Munster League took place today in Charleville and it was Ennis A who finished in first place in Division 1. A win over Sarsfields in Round 9 and a narrow loss to Limerick in Round 10 was enough to win the league, as the only team who could overtake us, Tralee, lost their last round match to Sarsfields. Upcoming Tournaments

The Summer months are usually a quieter time for chess events, in Ireland anyway, however there are a number of tournaments taking place over the next while.

The last 2 rounds of the 2023/2024 Munster League take place on 12th May with,, in Division 1, Ennis A currently leading Tralee by half a match point and with a better game point score also. In Division 2, Charleville lead the way from Cork B, while in Division 3 St Michaels are just ahead of UCC A.

The European Schools Chess Championship takes place in the University of Limerick from 30th May to 8th June. I believe this is the first time Ireland has hosted a continental chess competition and it is a significant undertaking with competitors from 20 countries taking part across 12 sections.

The Drogheda Congress takes place from the 1st to the 3rd June and entry is via the Irish Chess Union website.

The 103rd Irish chess championships takes place in Dublin in early August and includes weekenders, a weekday open, a rapid and a blitz along with the main event to make for a real festival of chess.

Ennis A quest to retain their Division 1 title, continued yesterday with two match wins on the penultimate day of this seasons Munster League.

The last 2 rounds of the 2023 Munster League took place last weekend. Ennis A finished with two wins to complete the season on maximum match points.I’m not sure when was the last time a team won every single match of the season, but it must be a long time ago. Possibly the Douglas team of the late 80s/early 90s did so.

Well done to Limerick A who finished in second place and also to Tralee who won Division 2, Ennis B had a match win and a match loss and finished in second place in Division 2. There is a possibility our B team could play in Division 1 next season, depending on whether Tralee take up their place in Division 1 or prefer to continue in Division 2.

Rounds 7 and 8 of the Munster League took place last weekend and two match wins by Ennis A, when combined with other results, means that Ennis A are mathematically certain of wining the league regardless of results in the final two rounds next month.

In the second division Ennis B continued their quest for promotion with a win over Dungarvan and a draw with Galway, however two wins for Tralee means that Tralee will finish in first place in Division 2 regardless of results on the last day. I can’t remember the last time the winners of both Divisions were already decided in advance of the final two rounds.
