Munster League Rounds 1 and 2

The Munster League 2018-2019 season commenced today in Charleville. Ennis had two difficult matches as we faced the teams that finished in first and second place last year Sarsfields and CCYMS. There was a minutes silence as a mark of respect to Philip Short prior to the first round.

Our match against Sarsfields was a close one. With the scores at 2-2 Luke Scott was pushing for a win in the ending against Martin O’Grady in the last game to finish. Martin held on to ensure the game and match finished drawn.

Ennis A 2.5- 2.5 Sarsfields
1. R Quinn 0-1 P Walsh
2. T Dunne 0.5-0.5 P Kiely
3. L Scott 0.5-0.5 M O’Grady
4. M O’Donnell 0.5-0.5 F Noonan
5. N Larter 1-0 L O’Brien

In the next round we had an excellent result with a comprehensive victory over CCYMS

1. R Quinn 1-0 K Moynihan
2. T Dunne 0.5-0.5 P O’Donovan
3. L Scott 1-0 G MCarthy

Italian IM visits Ennis

Italian IM Pierluigi Piscopo is staying in Ennis this weekend while he competes in the Limerick Open. He paid a visit to O’Keeffes last night to sample some good Guinness, play some blitz and he also found time to show us some of his best games, some of which were very nice. Originally from Puglia in Italy, Pierluigi now lives and works as a chess coach in Corsica. You can get updates from the Limerick Open this weekend at the Irish Chess Union website.

Olympiad- China win double gold

A last round draw with the USA was enough for China to take gold in the Open section with the Americans finishing second and Russia third. Poland might be a little disappointed to finish just outside the medal placings in fourth but can reflect on an excellent tournament including wins over both USA and Russia. The Irish team, who were seeded 66th in the Open, finished in 82nd place.

China also won gold in the women’s event with Ukraine finishing second and Georgia third. The Irish women’s team finished in 83rd place. They were seeded 87th.

RIP Philip Short

Irish chess lost one of it’s titans recently with the death of Philip Short. I remember as a youngster going through Philips games in copies of the Irish Chess Journal. I got to play him quite a few times in more recent years. He was an excellent chess player but more importantly was a very pleasant and modest person. Deepest sympathies to all his family and friends.
