Larter – Nyander

Nick Larter sent on this excerpt from his game against Joakim Nyander in the Mulcahy last weekend.

N. Larter 1715 v J. Nyander 2223, Mulcahy Memorial 2017, Rd. 2
Opening: B20 (1.e4 c5 2.c4 b6).

Position after 36..Rd2

Black has just played 36...Rd2. How should White respond?

Black has just played 36…Rd2. How should White respond?

The critical position from my most interesting game at this year’s Mulcahy. Black’s threat now is just to take the bishop, so I have to act. Here I misread the board and played the very poor 37.Rxf6? and after 37…gxf6 38.Qh7+ Kf8, if I were to try and bring another piece into the attack, Black would quickly mate me, so I had to bail out with 39.Nxe6+ Qxe6 40.Qh6+ Kg8 41.Qxd2 – an exchange down – eventually losing the game in another 20 moves or so, playing on increments.

On the other hand moving the target away with 37.Bg4! would have given me a +1.5 advantage according to the engines and (since Black cannot take the bishop with his knight on account of the mate) launch me on a king hunt after 37…Qd4+ 38.Kh1 Qb2 39.Bxe6+. Such are the margins!
