Munster League Rounds 1 and 2

The Munster League 2018-2019 season commenced today in Charleville. Ennis had two difficult matches as we faced the teams that finished in first and second place last year Sarsfields and CCYMS. There was a minutes silence as a mark of respect to Philip Short prior to the first round.

Our match against Sarsfields was a close one. With the scores at 2-2 Luke Scott was pushing for a win in the ending against Martin O’Grady in the last game to finish. Martin held on to ensure the game and match finished drawn.

1. R Quinn 0-1 P Walsh
2. T Dunne 0.5-0.5 P Kiely
3. L Scott 0.5-0.5 M O’Grady
4. M O’Donnell 0.5-0.5 F Noonan
5. N Larter 1-0 L O’Brien

In the next round we had an excellent result with a comprehensive victory over CCYMS

2. T Dunne 0.5-0.5 P O’Donovan

The Ennis Open finished today in a 3 way tie for first. Winner for the last two years IM Lucian Costin-Miron finished tied for first place with his compatriot FM Daniel Hristodescu and Anthony Bourached of Trinity College. All three finished on 5 points.
Two Ennis players tied for first in the U1400 with last years winner Azzizbek Shamsiddinov sharing first place with young Dylan Murphy who had an excellent tournament to finish on 5 points and get his first top place finish in a major tournament (probably the first of many!). Results and some games are linked to from the Irish Chess Union website.

Easter results

Two Irish players made norms at the recent Easter tournaments in Dublin, winning their sections in the process. IM Alex Lopez made a GM norm. After starting somewhat slowly he won his last 5(!) games to win the tournament and make a norm. A little bit reminiscent of his performance in the Irish Championships last year when he won his last 4 games to tie for first. In the IM tournament FM Conor O’Donnell made an IM norm and won the tournament. Details at chess results and the ICU site.

Online entry for Irish Championships and Ennis Chess Congress

The Irish Championships this year will take place in the West County Hotel in Ennis from the 29th July to the 6th August. Obviously great news for local players that the Irish will run in Ennis. To the best of my knowledge this is the first time the Championships has been held in Ennis. Entry is available via the Irish Chess Union website. To be eligible to play in the main event requires a minimum rating of 1900 on the June 2017 rating list. There are ancillary events running that are open to all.

National Club Championships and Irish Championships 2017

Details received from John McMorrow re the upcoming National Club Championships which are being held in the Gresham Hotel, Dublin next weekend 4th and 5th March. Running alongside the NCC is the Irish Mind Sports Championship for U1600 players. On the Friday night the Irish Mind Sports Championships blitz event will take place. Its a 9 round 3 minute +2 sec aside event with a good prize fund. Looks like an excellent line up of events for the weekend.

John also sent on details of this years Irish Championships which are returning to Limerick for the first time since 2013. The venue will be the Savoy Hotel which is a great location for the tournament. Round times have been changed from 2pm to 3pm and the event is already shaping up to be a strong one.

Brochure for NCC and Irish Mind Sports

Brochure for Irish Championships 2017 – Apparently the venue for this years Irish has changed to the West County in Ennis owing to lack of availability in the Savoy. Obviously good news for any Ennis chess players, I think its the first time Ennis has hosted the Irish.
