Prague Open and some other bits and bobs.

The Prague Open kicks off today in…well.. Prague…. Jan Sodoma is trying to make enough FIDE points to get his IM title. Irish players Peter Cafolla and Anthony Fox are also competing. You can see how they get on at the tournament website.

By the way just came across this website for a club in Belfast that I thought I would share. Some entertaining stuff on there.

As a further aside I just realised today that Joona Kiiski who currently plays for Limerick in the Munster League is one of the programmers of the excellent (opensource!) chess engine Stockfish. According to Wikipedia the 64 bit version has a rating of 3241 which makes it one of the strongest freely available chess programmes. The only stronger ones I see in the list on wikipedia are Critter and Houdini and even then there is very little beween them. Incidentally if you are into computer chess and/or programming there is a big debate taking place about the decision by the Intenational Comuter Games Association to ban Rybka programmer Vasik Rajilch for life from ICGA events and strip Rybka of its world computer chess champion titles. The row is well doumented over at Chessbase.

  1. Hi Rory,

Sorry to keep quibbling today, but you seem to be a little behind the times on this one: Joona Kiiski played for Limerick last season, but isn’t on their panel this year; he moved to Galway a few months ago.

Also, I am told that some people think that chessbase (which sells Rybka) has been less than impartial in their reporting of the Rybka scandal. I have no views on this myself; I’m merely reporting. I’ll try to ask Joona next time I see him; his views (if he is willing to express them) are probably worth more than anyone else’s in Ireland.

    Keep the stories coming!

    Pete

    • Hi Pete, hadnt realised that Joona was no longer playing for Limerick, I dont think Ennis A have played them yet this season so I hadn’t seen that he wasn’t playing for them anymore. Re the rbyka story I think chessbase after initially publishing Vasiljchs side of the story are a bit more balanced now. The link I give is to Levys reply and also contains responses from readers some of whom support the ban and others who dont. From my reading of it, it seems there was a definitely a case to answer, apparently some redundant code from Fruit which had ‘accidentally’ been left in the programme appeared in Rbyka indicating that it had been copied verbatim. Whether rybka would be unique in this regard I doubt somehow though, would be interested in what Joona or someone like Lorcan would make of the whiole thing.
